Quan arriba aquesta època de l'any la majoria de pobles i ciutats monten unes parades destinades a oferir articles per decorar el Nadal i el pessebre. I a Madrid aquestes parades les col.loquen a la Plaza Mayor, que aquests dies, més que mai, és un bullider de gent. Dues coses em criden l'atenció de les "casetas" per les que tafanejo: en primer lloc que s'hi venen molts articles de broma i destinats al jolgorio de cap d'any, sobretot coses pel cap i unes ulleres amb variacions del motiu hortera, però totes amb el 2017 ben visible. I l'altre cosa que m'ha deixat estorada és..... el caganer! Sí, amics, els pessebres a Madrid també es fan amb caganer, barretina inclosa. Li vaig preguntar a una venedora si es venien bé i em va dir "uy, sí, ya lo creo, se venden mucho". Entranyable figura la de l'escatològic intrús del pessebre, probablement el més vigent de tots els personatges del neixement perque, al capdavall, per més nostrada que sigui la figureta, ningú representa millor la condició humana. El caganer no només executa una funció fisiològica, és també tot un símbol de que l'ésser humà, per més eixerit que es consideri, no para de cagar-la. _____________________________________ #madrid #spain #plazamayor #casetasnavideñas #navidad

Soooo many feels as I sit in the airport in moresby, about to leave the place I've called home for the last few months in Papua New Guinea. As I sit and reflect on everything I've experience, I'm truly overcome by the hospitality of everyone on the mission field, and those I have had the pleasure of crossing paths with during my time at kudjip, and around the province. Of course, need to end this chapter of my life with a bang right!? I had some hours to spare in my short flight from the highlands to moresby so I went outside the gate to look at some things the locals made. Luckily my Tok Pisin has become adequate and I could successfully chat with the locals, who had gathered around to see the "white meri" trying to speak their language with them. One of the things that really resonated with me during my time in kudjip hospital was the amount of domestic violence and tribal violence I saw. Almost half the women I spoke with had stories of horrific domestic violence by their husbands, and it was looked at as almost normal and just the way things are up in the highlands. For some reason this came up in conversation with these people I was chatting with, and I was able to make a speech in front of the women, both young and old, about how it's okay to be a single, free, female and we should be prideful and stand up for our rights, and we are "algeta strongpela meri tru" and do not need to rely on a husband to have a good life. Apparently the women I were speaking with also resonated with this and our conversation was completed with applause, clicks of their tongue in agreement, smiles, and tears. I will never forget my time in Papua New Guinea, especially my time getting to know the locals throughout many villages. I'll always remember their stories, even if it was in passing, or on the side of the road outside of the airport. I've never met stronger, more amazing people, let alone women, in another country before, and I know they will never know how much they gave me during my time here. #medicalmissionlife #papuanewguinea #somanyfeels #imcominforyahawaii
