“it’s not rocket science.”
eg. All you need to do is reformat the hard drive. It isn’t rocket science!
“shoot the breeze.”
eg. Customers always want to shoot the breeze with me in the store before they buy something.
“for the birds”
eg. Driving is for the birds when you live in a big city.
“put up your dukes”
“Put up your dukes”
eg. I put up my dukes, expecting him to strike me at any moment.
“behind the eight ball”
eg. If we don’t leave early tomorrow, we’ll be behind the eight ball, and I doubt we’ll reach the cabin by dusk.
“the cat’s out of the bag”
eg. Now that the cat is out of the bag, there is no sense in pretending we don’t know what’s really happening.
“Don’t cry over spilt milk”
eg. Don’t cry over spilled milk—we already submitted the report, so we can’t fix it now.
“jump on the bandwagon”
eg. A: “I thought your mom hated that candidate.”
B: “Well, he’s the president now, so she decided to jump on the bandwagon.”
“cold turkey”
“Cold turkey”
eg. After smoking for so long, I should have never tried to quit cold turkey—the withdrawal symptoms are unbearable.
“plead the Fifth”
eg. Just plead the Fifth if your mom asks where you’ve been all night!
