還記得高中時，我們都在為那些長得很像、用法卻大不同的英文單字感到頭痛嗎？畢業這麼多年，老實說很多東西都已經忘光了，即使後來進入職場偶爾會需要使用英文書信與人來往，但這時已經搞不清楚是否用錯字詞，甚至是隱隱約約覺得有點不對勁，也懶得回頭去查資料重學了。
然而，商業上的 e-mail 往來卻是展現專業度的第一關，不妨往下看看幾個最常被搞混的字，先從這裡開始著手改變吧。
Advice vs Advise：
建議、勸告
Advice 與 Advise 雖然只差一個字母，但用法卻完全不同。Advi “c" e 是名詞，而 Advi “s” e 則是動詞。
範例：
Advice → My manager usually gives us good advice.（我的主管通常給我們好的建議）
Advise → Andy advised Judy to avoid confrontation with the client.（Andy 建議 Judy 不要與客戶起正面衝突）
E.g. vs I.e.：
例如 / 也就是、換言之
E.g. 與 I.e. 都是我們在書信往來中常使用到的字，但很奇怪的是很多人都會混淆這兩個詞的用法。E.g. 來自拉丁文 “Exempli gratia”，也就是 "for example” ，「例如」的意思。而 I.e. 則源於拉丁文的 “id est"，是「也就是」、「換言之」、「亦即」等意思。
範例：
E.g.→ We have regular team meetings to discuss what everyone is doing (e.g. breakthrough or ongoing projects.)（我們有固定的團隊會議，討論大家都在做什麼，例如：最近的突破或正在進行的計畫。）
I.e.→ Andrew works the night shift, i.e., midnigt until 6 a.m.（Andrew 是上大夜班的，也就是午夜到早上六點。）
Affect vs Effect：
影響、作用
記得高中時期我常搞不清楚這兩個字的用法，其實 “A”ffect 是動詞，而 “E” ffect 則是名詞。
範例：
Affect → His procrastination affects the performance of the team.（他的拖延影響著團隊的表現）
Effect → The effect of his procrastination is bad to the team.（他的拖延給團隊帶來不好的影響）
Farther vs Further：
更遠的、更遠地 / 深一層的、進一步的
Farther 通常會用在實體上的距離，而 Further 則會用在比喻上的無形距離。
範例：
Farther→ The office is moving farther north.（辦公室要搬到更北邊去。）
Further→ Dan is further away from finishing his project than Nancy is.（Dan 完成案子的距離比 Nancy 還要遠。）
Among vs Amongst：
在...中間、在...之中
Among 跟 Amongst 兩種用法一個是美式一個是英式，兩者理論上意義與用法都一樣，但對習慣美式教育的人來說，用 “Amongst” 可能會顯得有點老套、卡卡的。
範例：
Among→ Among the staff, his performance is the best.（在員工之中，他的表現是最好的）
Amongst→ Amongst the staff, his performance is the best.（在員工之中，他的表現是最好的）
Assure vs Ensure vs Insure：
擔保、保障、使放心 / 保證、確保 / 保險、為...投保
這三個以 -sure 結尾的字使用錯誤率極其高，通常 "assure” 會拿來指那種「一定會發生」或「一定正確」的事情，而 “ensure” 則表示去確定或去確保某些事情，最後 "insure” 則與「保險」"Insurance” 這個字有關，代表為...投保、保險。
範例：
Assure→ My colleague assured me that this proposal won’t go wrong.（我同事向我保證這個提案不會有錯。）
Ensure→ Our team is double checking to ensure the plan goes well.（我們團隊正在二次確認每個步驟，確保計畫進行順利。）
Insure→ The company will insure us for 1 million dollars in case of a lawsuit.（公司會替我們投保一百萬以防訴訟發生。）
Imply vs Infer：
暗示、意味著 / 推斷、猜想
Imply 表示去暗示某件事情，而 Infer 則是從一些背景資訊中去拼湊、推斷某件事情。
範例：
Imply→ Our manager implied that there will be a major change in company structure.（我們主管向我們暗示公司結構將有大變動。）
Infer→ Based on these events, we inferred that there will be a big change in company.（根據這些事件，我們猜想公司會有一個大變動。）
